1/18th documents the arrival of two German immigrants to North America and their travels throughout the continent in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Arriving by ship to New York City with their car on board, their journey takes them far north to Alaska and south to Mexico before settling in Vancouver, Canada. Originally recorded on Super 8 movie film, groups of frames have been extracted at high resolution and presented in still format.

In contrast to today when almost anything can be easily recorded in high definition video using a common mobile phone, the 8 mm movie cameras of almost 50 years ago were much slower and more deliberate in their use. Recording times were limited and the larger cameras meant that filming everything happening was not practical. There was some room for spontaneity, but what primarily emerged were the moments that mattered; the scenes or experiences that left an impression at the time.
